The big athletes of Cadore: from De Zolt to Vittozzi, from Piller Cottrer to Constantini

With 5 Days of Italy in the Italian cradle of winter sports, between legends of the past and stars of the future.

From 1 to 5 July it will welcome the international orienteering community but Cadore boasts an indissoluble bond with sport, especially in winter, which finds its roots in the past with a proud look towards the future. Precisely this area and the province of Belluno have given birth to numerous athletes of international level, from skiing to biathlon, who have entered with their successes, together with Cadore, the hearts of all enthusiasts.

Maurilio De Zolt is simply a legend, a 5 Days of Italy friend, of which he was a guest of honor in 2019. The “cricket” from San Pietro di Cadore, as his fans still like to call him due to his unconventional physicality, defends an unbeaten record: in Italian cross-country skiing, he became the oldest athlete to win gold at the Olympics at the age of 43, those of Lillehammer 1994 in the relay. He enters the annals by climbing to the top step of the podium in the 50km at the 1987 Oberstdorf World Championships. A total Palmares of 19 Italian titles in his career, ten of which in the 50km, in addition to one gold, three silver, and two bronze at the World Championships, one gold and two silver at the Olympics. A sports lover at 360° as much to try his hand at running and cycling.

Born in Pieve di Cadore, the Italian national team biathlete Lisa Vittozzi, also in the Carabinieri Sports Group, already dreams of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. In the 2019 Oberhof World Cup, she wrote history with a double in the Sprint and in the 10km pursuit, the first Italian victory, between men and women, in this format. In the discipline that mixes cross-country skiing and shooting, the 27-year-old athlete, now living in Sappada, has achieved an Olympic bronze medal and four world medals.

Retired in 2013, Pietro Piller Cotter, from Pieve di Cadore too, is an ex-Nordic skier, and Olympic and world cross-country champion. In the eight editions of the World Championships in which he participated, he took home two bronze medals and the title in the 15 km free technique in Oberstdorf 2005. From 1998 to 2010 he took to the field four times in the Winter Olympic Games, winning one gold, two silver, and one bronze. In Turin 2006 he contributed, as third fractions and with the best time, to the Italian victory in the 4×10 km relay.

Thanks to the Olympic gold with Amos Mosaner in Beijing 2022 she allowed curling to finally be known throughout Italy. Stefania Constantini, born in 1999 in Pieve di Cadore, has been pursuing her passion since she was 8 years old, joining the Fiamme Oro Sports Group in 2021. In 2017 her first international success was with bronze in the team event at the European Championships in St. Gallen. A bridge between the past and the future, which will continue to make Cadore the cradle of winter sports in the world.
