TIZIANO BIRTH HOUSE
Walking through the Pieve di Cadore center, on Arsenale street, you can come across a historic Cadore building from the 15th century, which on the surface may seem just the typical home of a distinct local family. Those very walls, on the other hand, gave birth in about 1490 to one of the most illustrious artists of the Italian Renaissance and of art history, the painter Tiziano Vecellio, known as Tiziano.

The current structure, the result of renovations and modifications dating back to 1926 and then to 1928-1930, houses on the ground floor reproductions of his drawings collection in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, as well as documentation on his career. Upstairs are the rooms where Tiziano lived up to the age of ten and where, after moving to Venice, he resided each time he returned home. The painter is one of the great masters of color and has historical significance for his role as a European entrepreneur, capable of managing a workshop with collaborators for clients throughout the continent.
ITINERARIES OF THE GREAT WAR
It may seem difficult to believe but that profound sense of stillness that hovers among the Cadore mountains has not always inhabited the Belluno Dolomites. On the eve of the Great War, the territory was within the Habsburg Empire but close to the border with the Kingdom of Italy. When this declared war on Austria-Hungary, Cadore, and the Belluno Dolomites line was transformed from 1915 to 1917 into a great battlefield.
From the bottom of the valley to the peaks, kilometers of trenches and outposts were dug and fortifications were built. The bloodiest battles of the First World War were fought on the peaks of the Tofane Massif, Lagazuoi, Col di Lana, Monte Piana, and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. History buffs and trekkers can come across remains of the conflict along marked paths and mule tracks, while the villages in the valleys preserve their memory in cemeteries, shrines, monuments, and museums. Do not miss the Fort of Monte Ricco which dominates Pieve di Cadore.
ROMAN SANCTUARY OF MONTE CALVARIO
Inaugurated in 2021, the sanctuary is unique in the world by combining Romanesque elements in a Venetian context. Located at the top of a hill, it can be reached through a pleasant path created thanks to the recovery of a Via Crucis route dating back to the 18th century. From pagan temple to sanctuary for Christian rites: in its first phase, it consisted only of an enclosure around an open-air altar, but was later made monumental by terracing walls and the construction of a large room, partially buried against the slope. Among the finds, preserved in the Palazzo Corte Metto Polythematic Museum in the Auronzo di Cadore center, there are two spectacular votive discs in bronze foil, coins, and fibulae which seem to indicate that the sanctuary was frequented above all by soldiers, passing along the road towards the pass of Monte Croce Comelico.

CASA NATALE DI TIZIANO
Camminando per le strade di Pieve di Cadore, in via Arsenale, potrai imbatterti in uno storico edificio cadorino del XV secolo, che all’apparenza potrebbe sembrare solo la tipica dimora di una distinta famiglia locale. Proprio quelle mura, invece, hanno dato i natali nel 1490 circa a uno dei più illustri artisti del Rinascimento e della storia dell’arte, il pittore Tiziano Vecellio, noto come Tiziano.
L’odierna struttura, frutto di rifacimenti e di modifiche risalenti al 1926 e poi al biennio 1928-1930, ospita al pianterreno riproduzioni della collezione di suoi disegni alla Galleria degli Uffizi di Firenze, oltre a documentazione sulla carriera. Al piano superiore si trovano le stanze dove Tiziano ha vissuto fino ai dieci anni e dove, dopo il trasferimento a Venezia, risiedeva ad ogni rientro in patria. Il pittore è uno dei grandi maestri del colore e riveste una rilevanza storica per il ruolo di imprenditore europeo, capace di gestire una bottega con collaboratori per committenti in tutto il continente.

ITINERARI DELLA GRANDE GUERRA
Ti sembrerà difficile crederlo ma quel profondo senso di quiete che aleggia tra le montagne cadorine non ha sempre abitato le Dolomiti Bellunesi. Alla vigilia della Grande Guerra, il territorio si trovava all’interno dell’Impero asburgico ma a ridosso del confine con il Regno d’Italia. Quando questo dichiarò guerra all’Austria-Ungheria, il Cadore e la linea delle Dolomiti Bellunesi si trasformarono dal 1915 al 1917 in un grande campo di battaglia.
Dal fondovalle fino alle vette furono scavati chilometri di trincee e costruiti appostamenti e fortificazioni. Le più sanguinose battaglie della Prima Guerra Mondiale si combatterono sulle cime del Massiccio delle Tofane, del Monte Lagazuoi, del Col di Lana, del Monte Piana e delle Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Gli appassionati di storia e trekking possono incontrare resti del conflitto lungo sentieri tracciati e mulattiere, mentre i paesini delle valli ne custodiscono la memoria nei cimiteri, sacrari, monumenti e musei. Imperdibile il Forte di Monte Ricco che domina Pieve di Cadore.

SANTUARIO ROMANO DEL MONTE CALVARIO
Inaugurato nel 2021 il santuario è unico al mondo coniugando elementi romanici in un contesto veneto. Posto alla sommità di un colle, è raggiungibile attraverso un piacevole percorso realizzato grazie al recupero del tracciato di una via Crucis risalente al XVIII sec. Da tempio pagano a santuario per riti cristiani: nella sua prima fase era costituito solo da un recinto intorno a un altare a cielo aperto, ma venne in seguito reso monumentale da muri di terrazzamento e dalla costruzione di un grande ambiente, parzialmente interrato contro il pendio. Tra i reperti rinvenuti, conservati al Museo Politematico Palazzo Corte Metto nel centro di Auronzo di Cadore, sono presenti due spettacolari dischi votivi di lamina di bronzo, monete e fibule che sembrano indicare una frequentazione del santuario soprattutto da parte di militari, di passaggio lungo il percorso stradale verso il passo di Monte Croce Comelico.
