Orienteering and youths. The role of 5 Days of Italy in developing our youngsters

21 Jan 2023

An international event such as 5 Days of Italy assumes a primary value for the Italian and local orienteering movement: an unmissable opportunity for comparison, especially for the younger generations, with the excellence of central and northern Europe, in addition to the legacy linked to the cartographic facility.

We talked about it with Mauro Gazzerro and Aaron Gaio, respectively presidents of the Veneto and Trentino Committees, on the sidelines of the 2022 season’s closing parties.

What is the evaluation of the Trentino Committee regarding the youth movement?
“The under 20 competitive team followed the preparation of the boys, some of whom belonged to the youth national team – declares the president of the Trentino Committee Aaron Gaio – It took part in the Trofeo delle Regioni (1st place), in the Alpe Adria Orienteering Cup (4th place) and Arge Alp (4th place). A balance that bodes well for 2023, where the big appointment will be Arge Alp in Folgaria in October. Orienteering in Trentino is more rooted than in other regions thanks to the enthusiasm and professionalism of historical clubs. However we are far from covering the entire territory and among the objectives there is a relaunch in areas where it is less known. In Val di Sole the movement is growing and we hope to sow seeds in Garda Trentino as well, where the 2023 European Championships will be held”.

In Veneto, on the other hand, how are the activities proceeding?
“In addition to participating with the youth team in Alpe Adria – declares the president of the Veneto Committee Mauro Gazzerro – in 2022 the Committee organized a high-level technical summer meeting for Venetians aged 12 to 25 years in Auronzo di Cadore. The representative also took part in the Trofeo delle Regioni. Veneto is confirmed as the region with the highest number of members in Italy, driven by the provinces of Treviso, Belluno, Venice and Vicenza. We have also encouraged attention to young people, drawing up a ranking of the regional performances obtained by the under 20s every year, with prizes for the most deserving clubs. Only in the provinces of Padua and Rovigo orienteering is not practiced due to the lack of maps or suitable terrain”.

What youth activities will be organized in association with 5 Days of Italy?
“The Veneto Committee – continues Gazzerro – is organizing a summer meeting for under 25 youth in association with 5 Days of Italy in order to involve the youngsters during the competitions. The 2023 goal is to enhance the training possibilities offered, which will make them grow from a competitive point of view, in order to raise the technical level of the region. As in all editions, young people will be involved, both as athletes and as volunteers, an important role in view of the growth of a movement also capable of organizing competitions and events”.

What value do these events have for the growth and development of the discipline?
“The previous editions of 5 Days of Italy in Trentino – continues Gaio – have contributed to the development of orienteering, to the promotion of sport, allowing young people to test themselves on technical terrains and with top international athletes. The maps created were also used for subsequent competitions. The tourist induced is not to be underestimated, as the visibility that the location can enjoy. 5 Days of Italy gives young people (and others) the opportunity to open their horizons”.

Quali attività giovanili saranno organizzate in associazione a 5 Days of Italy?
