Stage 4 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, 3 curiosities about Fiames
In our journey to discover the stages of 5 Days Dolomites Cadore we have reached the appointment scheduled for Tuesday 4th July, the Stage 4. To tackle the Long Distance the orienteers will leave the Cadore Valley to reach Cortina d’Ampezzo, more precisely the small fraction of Fiames with its beautiful forest. Three curiosities to get to know this wonderful location, which will make you fall in love with the Queen of the Dolomites!
Cortina D’Ampezzo, undoubtedly the most famous town in the area, is located in the center of the Conca d’Ampezzo, in the upper Boite Valley. It is surrounded by the most renowned peaks of the Dolomites: the Tofane to the west, the Pomagagnon to the north, the Cristallo to the north-east, the Faloria and the Sorapiss to the east, the Becco di Mezzodì, the Croda da Lago and the Nuvolau to the south. The Boite torrent and the Fanes torrent cross Cortina and form small waterfalls along their route. The pretty village of Fiames, which will host the Long Distance, is located at an altitude of 1,293 meters and it is full of peculiarities.
FIAMES GIVES HIS NAME TO A PEAK
With an altitude of 2,240 mt, Punta Fiames is not among the highest in the area, but the ascent along the via ferrata, built in 1964 in honor of the mountain guide Albino Michielli Strobel, is spectacular as the panorama at the summit. From the car park at the Fiames hotel, cross the state road and begin to climb along a cart track, until you find a path on the right that leads to a rock gully. Following it, you reach the foot of the west wall, while the via ferrata begins at the end on the left. The steepest and most exposed sections of the via ferrata are well secured, but some passages without metal ropes also have to be overcome. The rocky landscape alternates with flat ledges with a prevalence of mountain pines, which can be overcome with a gentle walk. The ascent to Punta Fiames takes about 2 hours.
THE CORTINA-DOBBIACO TRACK STARTS FROM FIAMES
Cortina-Dobbiaco develops along the former railway line of the Dolomites, closed in 1964 and then used as a cross-country track in winter and a cycle path in summer. This track has also hosted a historic cross-country race since 1977: the Granfondo Dobbiaco-Cortina, one of the most traditional ski marathon races in Italy and stage of the International Championship. The whole route, without difficulty, is traced both for the classic style and for skating, so anyone who loves cross-country skiing can tackle it without problems. The route is uphill slightly but constantly with crossings in tunnels and bridges of the old railway which give a special charm to this itinerary.
IT WILL HOST THE MILAN-CORTINA 2026 OLYMPIC VILLAGE
News of the last few days: the Olympic village for the athletes of Cortina for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be realized in Fiames. It will be made up of a series of temporary houses with a total capacity of 1,200-1,300 seats.

Nel nostro viaggio alla scoperta delle tappe di 5 Days Dolomiti Cadore siamo giunti all’appuntamento in programma martedì 4 luglio, lo Stage 4. Per affrontare la Long Distance gli orientisti lasceranno la Valle Cadorina per raggiungere Cortina d’Ampezzo, più precisamente la piccola frazione di Fiames con la sua meravigliosa foresta. Tre curiosità per conoscere questa stupenda location, che vi farà innamorare della Regina delle Dolomiti!
Cortina D’Ampezzo, senza dubbio il più famoso comune della zona, è situata al centro della Conca d’Ampezzo, nell’alta Valle del Boite. È circondata da gran parte delle vette più rinomate delle Dolomiti: le Tofane a ovest, il Pomagagnon a nord, il Cristallo a nord-est, il Faloria e il Sorapiss a est, il Becco di Mezzodì, la Croda da Lago e il gruppo del Nuvolau a sud. Il Torrente Boite e il torrente Fanes attraversano Cortina e formano delle piccole cascate lungo il loro tragitto. Il grazioso villaggio di Fiames, che ospiterà la Long Distance, si trova a 1.293 metri di altitudine ed è ricco di peculiarità.
FIAMES DÀ IL SUO NOME A UNA CIMA
Con 2.240 m di altitudine la Punta Fiames non è tra le più alte della zona, ma la salita lungo la via ferrata, costruita nel 1964 in onore della guida alpina Albino Michielli Strobel, è spettacolare, così come il panorama in vetta. Dal parcheggio presso l’albergo Fiames, si attraversa la strada statale e si comincia a salire lungo una carrareccia, fino a trovare a destra un sentiero che conduce a un canalone di roccia. Seguendolo, si giunge ai piedi della parete ovest, mentre in fondo a sinistra inizia la via ferrata. I tratti più ripidi ed esposti della via ferrata sono ben assicurati, ma bisogna superare anche alcuni passaggi senza corde metalliche. Il paesaggio roccioso si alterna a sporgenze pianeggianti con prevalenza di pini mughi, che si superano con una tranquilla camminata. Per la salita alla Punta Fiames sono necessarie circa 2 ore.
DA FIAMES PARTE LA PISTA CORTINA-DOBBIACO
La Cortina-Dobbiaco si sviluppa lungo la ex linea ferroviaria delle Dolomiti, chiusa nel 1964 e adibita poi a pista da fondo in inverno e pista ciclabile in estate. Questo tracciato ospita anche una storica gara di fondo dal 1977: la Granfondo Dobbiaco-Cortina, una delle più tradizionali gare di ski marathon in Italia e tappa del Campionato Internazionale. Tutto il percorso, privo di difficoltà, è tracciato sia per lo stile classico che per lo skating, quindi chiunque ami lo sci di fondo può affrontarlo senza problemi. Il percorso è in salita leggera ma costante con attraversamenti in gallerie e ponti della vecchia ferrovia che danno un fascino speciale a questo itinerario.
OSPITERÀ IL VILLAGGIO OLIMPICO DI MILANO-CORTINA 2026
Notizia degli ultimi giorni: sorgerà proprio a Fiames il villaggio olimpico per gli atleti di Cortina per i Giochi Olimpici Invernali 2026. Sarà composto da una serie di casette provvisorie con una capienza totale di 1.200-1.300 posti.
