In Cadore 1200 orienteers from 38 countries for the 5 Days of Italy
From 1 to 5 July in the Dolomite villages a program of exciting orienteering challenges
with a map and compass. In the competition also the world champion Megan Carter-Davies. Veneto is increasingly home of orienteering: in October it will host the European Sprint Championships, valid as the World Cup finals
Fifth edition, 5 stages, 1200 participants representing 38 countries. These are the significant numbers of 2023 5 Days of Italy, the international orienteering event presented in the Sala Piloni of the Province of Belluno, which will return to the heart of Cadore from 1 to 5 July for a truly exciting sports show.
5 Days of Italy, under the aegis of the FISO-Italian Federation of Orientation Sports, benefits from the patronage of the Veneto Region, the Province of Belluno, the Unione Montana Centro Cadore and the Municipalities of Pieve di Cadore, Perarolo di Cadore, Lozzo di Cadore, Lorenzago di Cadore, Domegge di Cadore, Calalzo di Cadore, Auronzo di Cadore, Vigo di Cadore and Comelico Superiore, in collaboration with the DMO Dolomiti Bellunesi Foundation and the Magnificent Community of Cadore.
THE COMPETITION PROGRAM
The first stage will take place on the Middle distance on 1 July, starting at 4 pm, in Perarolo di Cadore in the wonderful Caralte Forest, with typical alpine terrain, steep with gradients, open pasture areas and few paths. The following morning, at 10 am, appointment in Tai di Cadore, at the Galvalux Arena – Stadio del Ghiaccio, for an enthralling Long on Monte Zucco, whose forest will present itself to the athletes in its wealth of clearings and gullies that are easily passable, from 800 at 1200 meters of altitude.
On 3 and 4 July, two new Middle courses are on the calendar, starting at 10 am. The first will take place in Valgrande (Padola), with an arena at the Terme di Valgrande: the race in the Alpine pine forest, from 1320 to 1500 meters above sea level, will be dotted with streams, hills and depressions but will guarantee excellent conditions of visibility and running speed. The following day, at 11 am, we will move to Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Fiames Forest, from 1300 to 1425 meters above sea level, always on an Alpine background with alternating areas rich in detail, between boulders, hills and tracks, and faster areas, including the Cortina-Dobbiaco cycle path.
The grand finale will involve, on 5 July at 10 am, lovers of the Sprint format in Pieve di Cadore, from Tiziano Square. The first fraction will be divided into a steep wooded area, characterized by some paths, while the second in an urban area, ranging from 880 to 950 meters above sea level. In the days preceding the competitions, the Model Events will be held in the Misurina and Somadida Forest (June 29) and in the villages of Calalzo di Cadore and Cortina (June 30).

THE TOP RUNNERS IN CADORE
Ready to give her best Annarita Scalzotto, PWT Italia athlete from Veneto, who recently won the titles of Italian Sprint Relay champion, in team with Riccardo Scalet and Sebastian Inderst, and of vice champion in the Sprint knock-out specialty. “I took part in the 2019 edition in Cadore – says the 21-year-old – a perfect place to practice orienteering thanks to its woods, which I proudly consider ‘my home’ having frequented it since childhood with my family! For me, the event is an unmissable appointment both for the high technical level of the organization and the tracks, which are always diversified, and for the fundamental confrontation with elite athletes. The titles won are an excellent starting point for my seasonal goal, the European Sprint Championships in October, and, even if on different routes, these races represent an important preparatory phase”.
Various illustrious names of the discipline will reach the Veneto. Among these, the Swedish champion Emil Wingstedt, the New Zealander Matt Ogden and the Sprint world champion Megan Carter-Davies, who will use her stay in Cadore to prepare, together with the British National Team, for the next international commitments. On the field there will be the FISO Veneto youth selection with regional promises and an international representative of orienteers aged 16 to 25, who will also participate in the Young Leaders Academy, a training seminar for future organizers of competitions held in collaboration with IOF-International Orienteering Federation.
A SPECIAL YEAR FOR VENETO
Not only 5 Days of Italy will bring great orienteering to Veneto. An absolute first time for Italy will be celebrated in Verona, Soave and Vicenza: from 1 to 8 October over 2 thousand athletes are expected for the European Orienteering Championships, valid as World Cup finals.
In addition to decreeing the elite champions, the kermesse will involve those who want to test themselves with the challenges of the EOC Tour driven by the desire to discover the sport of the woods, which for the occasion will land in the Venetian villages. The event will stop there thanks to the commitment of FISO and PWT Italia on assignment by the IOF-International Orienteering Federation, with the patronage of Sport and Health, the Veneto Regional Council, the Province and Municipality of Verona, the Province and City of Vicenza, Municipality of Soave, in addition to the charity partnerships with the Città della Speranza Foundation and the Don Mazzi Youth Centres.
“Thanks to orienteering – declares Gabriele Viale, General Manager EOC 2023 – there are 30 thousand tourist presences generated in 2023 in Veneto, of which about 12 thousand in Cadore and 18 thousand between Verona, Soave and Vicenza in October for the Europeans. Furthermore, the orienteering events from 2019 to today in Cadore will leave a unique and eco-sustainable cartographic system on the territory. Veneto, therefore, is increasingly home to outdoor sports and orienteering: a showcase that will anticipate 2024, the year in which it will be the European Region for Sport”.

Quinta edizione, 5 tappe, 1200 partecipanti in rappresentanza di 38 Paesi. Questi i significativi numeri di 5 Days of Italy 2023, manifestazione internazionale di corsa orientamento presentata presso la Sala Piloni della Provincia di Belluno, che dall’1 al 5 luglio tornerà nel cuore del Cadore per uno spettacolo sportivo davvero emozionante.
5 Days of Italy, sotto l’egida della Federazione Italiana Sport Orientamento, si avvale dei patrocini di Regione Veneto, Provincia di Belluno, Unione Montana Centro Cadore e Comuni di Pieve di Cadore, Perarolo di Cadore, Lozzo di Cadore, Lorenzago di Cadore, Domegge di Cadore, Calalzo di Cadore, Auronzo di Cadore, Vigo di Cadore e Comelico Superiore, in collaborazione con Fondazione DMO Dolomiti Bellunesi e Magnifica Comunità di Cadore.
IL PROGRAMMA GARE
La prima tappa si svolgerà su Middle distance l’1 luglio, con avvio alle ore 16, a Perarolo di Cadore nella meravigliosa Foresta di Caralte, dal tipico terreno alpino, ripido con dislivelli, aree aperte da pascolo e pochi sentieri. La mattina seguente, alle ore 10, appuntamento a Tai di Cadore, alla Galvalux Arena – Stadio del Ghiaccio, per un’avvincente Long sul Monte Zucco, il cui bosco si presenterà agli atleti nella sua ricchezza di radure e canaloni agilmente percorribili, dagli 800 ai 1200 metri di altitudine.
Il 3 e 4 luglio in calendario due nuove Middle, con partenza dalle ore 10. La prima avrà luogo in Valgrande (Padola), con arena presso le Terme di Valgrande: la gara di mezzofondo nella pineta alpina, dai 1320 ai 1500 metri di altitudine, sarà puntellata di ruscelli, poggi e depressioni ma garantirà ottime condizioni di visibilità e velocità di corsa. Il giorno seguente, alle ore 11, ci si sposterà a Cortina d’Ampezzo nella Foresta Fiames, dai 1300 ai 1425 metri di altitudine, sempre su fondo alpino con l’alternanza di zone ricche di dettagli, tra massi, collinette e tracciati, e aree più veloci, tra cui la pista ciclabile Cortina-Dobbiaco.
Il gran finale coinvolgerà, il 5 luglio alle ore 10, gli amanti del format Sprint a Pieve di Cadore, da piazza Tiziano. La prima frazione si articolerà su una ripida zona boschiva, caratterizzata da alcuni sentieri, mentre la seconda in area urbana, oscillando dagli 880 ai 950 metri di altitudine. Nei giorni precedenti le competizioni si terranno i Model Event nella Foresta di Misurina e Somadida (29 giugno) e nei borghi di Calalzo di Cadore e Cortina (30 giugno).

I TOP RUNNER IN CADORE
Pronta a dare il massimo Annarita Scalzotto, atleta veneta del PWT Italia, che ha recentemente conquistato i titoli di campionessa italiana Sprint Relay, in team con Riccardo Scalet e Sebastian Inderst, e di vice campionessa nella specialità Sprint knock-out. “Ho partecipato all’edizione 2019 in Cadore – racconta la 21enne – una località perfetta per praticare corsa orientamento grazie ai suoi boschi, che considero orgogliosamente ‘casa mia’ avendola frequentata sin dall’infanzia con la famiglia! Per me la manifestazione è un appuntamento imperdibile sia per l’alto livello tecnico dell’organizzazione e dei tracciati, sempre diversificati, sia per il fondamentale confronto con atleti élite. I titoli conquistati sono un ottimo punto di partenza per il mio obiettivo stagionale, i Campionati Europei Sprint di ottobre, e, anche se su differenti percorsi, queste gare rappresentano una importante fase preparatoria”.
Vari i nomi illustri della disciplina che raggiungeranno il Veneto. Tra questi, il fuoriclasse svedese Emil Wingstedt, il neozelandese Matt Ogden e la campionessa del mondo Sprint Megan Carter-Davies, che sfrutterà il soggiorno in Cadore per prepararsi, insieme alla Nazionale inglese, ai prossimi impegni internazionali. In campo non mancheranno la selezione giovanile FISO Veneto con le promesse regionali e una rappresentativa internazionale di orientisti dai 16 ai 25 anni, che parteciperanno anche al seminario formativo Young Leaders Academy per futuri organizzatori di gare, tenuto in collaborazione con IOF-International Orienteering Federation.
UN ANNO SPECIALE PER IL VENETO
Non solo 5 Days of Italy porterà il grande orienteering in Veneto. A Verona, Soave e Vicenza sarà celebrata una prima assoluta per l’Italia: dall’1 all’8 ottobre oltre 2mila atleti sono attesi per gli European Orienteering Championships, i Campionati Europei Sprint, validi come finali di Coppa del Mondo.
Oltre a decretare i campioni elite, la kermesse coinvolgerà chi vorrà mettersi alla prova con le sfide dell’EOC Tour spinto dal desiderio di scoprire lo sport dei boschi, che per l’occasione approderà nei borghi veneti. L’evento vi farà tappa grazie all’impegno della FISO e del PWT Italia su assegnazione della IOF-International Orienteering Federation, con i patrocini di Sport e Salute, Consiglio Regionale del Veneto, Provincia e Comune di Verona, Provincia e Città di Vicenza, Comune di Soave, oltre alle charity partnership con Fondazione Città della Speranza e Centri Giovanili Don Mazzi.
