“The crystal-clear alpine lakes, decorated with rhododendrons and gentians, provide a splash of colour to the surrounding bare rocks, allowing you to take away picturesque snapshots of the day”.

High up in the Presanella mountains, near Madonna di Campiglio, there’s a trail that takes you to five stunning high-altitude lakes. It’s a hike through the forests and across the meadows of the Dolomites, which are still pretty much off the beaten track, and the views are simply breathtaking.

You start at a high altitude, reaching 2,059 metres with the “5 Laghi” cable car. The loop tour is about 11 km long, but you can make it longer if you want. On the way, you’ll pass five lakes, and the views are great at all of them. The first lake is Lake Ritorto, which is flat and looks like a silver mirror. It’s the perfect place to stop and have a little think for a bit.

Then we head up to Lake Lambin, where the green meets the blue and the screen makes a picture. A little further on, Lake Serodoli appears: wild and set in a lunar landscape, it’s one of the most photographed.

Next, you’ll hit Lago Gelato, which is often still covered in snow even in the middle of summer, and the views of the Dolomite peaks are absolutely stunning. And finally, there’s Lago Nero (Black Lake), a small and cosy spot with a tranquil atmosphere.

If you’ve still got some energy to burn, you can head on down to Lake Nambino, tucked away in the woods and with a hut where you can grab a slice of strudel and take in some stunning views.

Just so you know. The trail is well signposted, but there are some steep and stony sections, so it’s better for people who are trained or have some experience in the mountains. It’s not suitable for pushchairs or small children. Be mindful of the mountains.
